It’s Sunday, and that means that it’s time again for our Round-Up, a weekly endeavor by our editorial team here at Speak Freely, which shockingly – or shamefully (you get to choose), I have not done a single time yet. Nonetheless, it is up to me now, here at my debut, to show you the best articles we spotted in the last seven days.
To begin with, our editor-in-chief Richard Mason made his debut at The Telegraph (yes, that Telegraph), where he argues that in the UK, tuition fees should be cut, but that the fees should be paid by students upfront.
In addition, over at The Broad Online, Richard also writes that it’s shocking that we still have a discussion on whether Communism could work, thus following up to the Institute of Economic Affairs’ Kristian Niemietz, who showed at CapX that Communism has indeed always ended up in failure.
What we need instead is the market economy, which has spurred economic growth on a scale unimaginable. Under these circumstances, we need to defend the capitalist system proudly – or, as Kate Andrews sums it up quite charmingly at CityAM, we need to stand up and say: “I’m a capitalist, you idot – and if you value freedom, you are too.”
It is a lesson that Jeremy Corbyn, Bernie Sanders, and the newest advocate for “democratic socialism,” Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old American trying to make socialism fashionable again, should take note of. Speaking of Ocasio-Cortez, José Niño argues at the Mises Institute that her rapid ascent to the political scene was actually quite predictable.
Finally, we are heading into August, which means that all of you probably don’t even know anymore what to do with all your free time. That’s why I assembled a study guide on the great Friedrich Hayek. So before you start to think about silly questions such as the meaning of life, you might want to check out the reading list either on FEE or right here at SpeakFreely. And if you are still pondering about life and all its intricacies, let us know: even now in summer, your submissions are more than welcome! Send us your piece straight away!
